The Lives of Others (german) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405094/

Amelie (french) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0211915/

The Edukators (german) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408777/

My Neighbour Totoro (japanese) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096283/

They're the ones that immediately spring to mind, probably quite obvious choices, but they are really brilliant films. I don't think any of them should be remade (although I'm disgusted to see a IMDB page for The Lives of Others with a 2013 date on it which I hope isn't a remake...). The Lives of Others is about something which is specifically german and related to Germany, the secret police and their activities, it just wouldn't be as good in English. Amelie I think works really well with subtitles, as a lot of what is said is in her mind anyway, so it is like you're reading her thoughts, which is great. The Edukators shouldn't be remade as they will probably dumb it down for an american audience and that would just be rubbish. For Totoro, I've watched it dubbed and the english children's voices were incredibly annoying...so it shouldn't be made again in English! It would just lose its charm if it became americanised.

I don't understand why people are so eager to remake films which are in a language other than their own. People should broaden their minds and take the chance of watching something outside of their comfort zone.

I don't think I can say my favourite - they are all good for different reasons! In terms of acting, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Benny and Joon are really excellent - I didn't even know it was him in Fear and Loathing at first! In terms of the character he plays, Edward Scissorhands and of course Pirates of the Caribbean are really good. For the worst, but also best, haha, accent, watch From Hell. For proof that when he has short hair his films are less good - watch Donnie Brasco and Public Enemies! Public Enemies especially - with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale starring, this film should have been amazing, but it just was quite disappointing. Oh, and how could I forget Chocolat - which is just a lovely film! :) Thats one of my films that I watch when I'm having a bad day - its just so nice and gentle :)

I'm just looking at IMDB and his list of films - theres loads I keep forgetting about! Totally forgot about The Libertine, might have to watch that again soon. And Finding Neverland. He's done such interesting characters over the years - one of the only "normal" type people he's played was recently in the Tourist, which most people seemed to dislike, but I quite liked it. The last scene was just fantastic, haha :)

But anyway, better stop thinking about Johnny Depp and get back to work!! :)

Books from 9th May to 26th May 2011 )

Wow. Well it does look like that I’ve read 91 books this year – but not 91 “proper” adult books! I’ve read 91 books in total, but “proper” adult novels is a lot less, as a lot of them were childrens or poetry, which aren’t any less good than adult novels of course, but they do take me a lot less time to read. I’m pleased I’m getting through so many books though, as I now can actually tell that I’m getting through the piles of books I have to read in my bedroom, which is good!

In terms of other “media”, I still haven’t got round to writing reviews of all the films I’ve seen so far, but the last one I saw was Pirates of the Caribbean 4, in the cinema, which was actually great! I really enjoyed the first three and the new one is just as good. There haven’t been many films which have come out recently which I have wanted to see, so I’m glad it was good. Plus I’ve also just discovered the series “Are You Being Served”, and it is so great!! So funny, I love it! :D Can’t believe I’ve never got into it before. I think its because the characters are so well drawn and have such distinct, erm, characters, its really good. I’m really into “characters” at the moment, as I’ve read some books with some really good characters in as well.

In terms of general life things, generally happy at the moment…going to Slimelight for a friend’s birthday tomorrow, which should be great! Also another friend who has only recently got into EBM / industrial music is coming along with their friends, which should also be great, I haven’t seen them for a while. Oh and I’ve just started my next OU course, its one which is just psychology, and from what I’ve read so far is really interesting! I’m really looking forward to working through it. The last essay for the previous course was incredibly boring, so I’m really glad I’ve got that all done now!

Films One to Five )

I watched a really lovely programme about Pixar on BBC3 last night. It was called Pixar's best 25 moments, but it also had about how the company developed, how they thought of the ideas, and had lots of interviews with people who have done the voices about how Pixar works and has developed. It was really lovely, and really showed how highly respected Pixar's work has become. Just lovely! Its available on the Iplayer now, watch it! :)

I watched 78 films this year...well actually I only watched 73, but watched one three times and three twice. I seem to have been quite generous with my film ratings, more generous than with books anyway. It might be that I often have more of an idea about what the films are about than I do with books, so I only watch ones on subjects I know I'll like, whereas with books I read anything!

I gave 8 films 10 / 10:

Hot Fuzz
Inglourious Basterds (Quentin Tarantino's version)
This Is England
Toy Story 3
Pulp Fiction
Shaun of the Dead
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Mary Poppins

I'd recommend everyone watch all of those actually :D Shaun of the Dead is my favourite film, and Mary Poppins was my favourite childhood film, so maybe start with them and move onto the rest! This Is England is soul-destroying (in a Requiem for a Dream kind of way), so you will have to watch something happy after it, haha.

I gave three films 5 / 10:

Doomsday
The Village
The Other Boleyn Girl

I can't remember why I didn't like Doomsday. The Village just had a weak story (but Adrian Brody was excellent in it). The Other Boleyn Girl was just horribly miscast and just had something about it which wasn't quite right. Which is a shame, as I really liked the book.

I kind of failed at trying to go to the cinema more - I did see 11 films at the cinema, but thats not as many times as I thought I would go. But then again there haven't been that many films which I really wanted to see at the cinema, otherwise I would have gone more. Well, the problem probably is that the cinema near me is just rubbish, and only has the main blockbuster films on, if you want to go and see any more independent or "arty" films, they just don't have them on. But oh well! The main film I wanted to see last year and didn't see was Inception. I still don't really know what its about (and don't want to know, in case it ruins the story!) but it sounds intreiging! (..or however that word is spelt...)

In the three days of this year I've already watched four films and one comedy dvd, so I better get on with my reviews this year! :)

Some more short film reviews! (short reviews, not short films!) )

Well that ends this series of film reviews on a high note! I seem to have rated most of them quite highly, but I think its because unlike books I tend to watch more films which I know I’ll like, rather than how I read books, which is just because they sound interesting. I will probably watch a couple more on Friday night (woo for a quiet night in on New Year when its expensive and crowded, and yay for going out on Saturday when theres room to dance and its cheaper!). I am really really really looking forward to seeing the Kings Speech, which I think comes out on 7th January, but apart from that I’m not sure what other films are out next year. I will have to have a look and check if there are any good ones!

Film 58

Film 58 - Red

"Red" stands for "Retired, Extremely Dangerous", and follows four retired CIA agents, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren. The story starts with Bruce Willis at his home, and he rings up the "Pensions Department" to speak to the girl who works there - to chat her up really! One night some assassins try to shoot Bruce Willis, and shoot his house up with machineguns in an attempt to kill him. He had already planned to go to Kansas City to see the girl who he had been talking to on the phone, so he goes there, so the assassins can't catch him. There he kidnaps the girl, as he knows that the CIA or FBI or something have been bugging his phone calls so they will be coming to get her too. She initially doesn't like this at all, but then he explains to her part of whats going on. Bruce Willis goes to see Morgan Freeman, who is in an old people's home, and gets him involved in trying to find out who is trying to kill him. Then someone tries to kill Morgan Freeman....meanwhile Bruce Willis goes to see John Malkovich, who is brilliant as this mad, paranoid man, such a great character! After this they've worked out that it is to do with some war crimes which they witnessed many years ago. They work out who is trying to kill them and - after going to get Helen Mirren, who plays a really English assassin, which is also great! - they go to an event with the intention of killing the vice-president of America, who actually committed the war crimes, and this is what being covered up.

After that very long and probably confusing description of what its about, I have to say, this film is great! :) Its a good mixture of action and comedy, but its a really subtle type of comedy, its not over the top or anything. Its definately similar to Burn After Reading and films like that. I wasn't sure if it would be too much action, but its not, its good. Also the characters are all very well done, especially John Malkovich's character. Recommended! :) 8 / 10

My rant for today – the IT helpdesk. Yesterday I was on the phone to them for 20 minutes without them picking up (I went from position 3, to position 1, then it told me they were sorry they couldn’t answer my call and to call back later! And now today I’ve been from position 3 to 1 and then said they couldn’t answer it, that was another 20 minutes wasted on the phone. I’m currently in position 4 in the queue….but if they ever pick up the phone I will probably have forgotten what I was ringing them about! The stupid thing is that every time you call them about a problem, they then later on send you a “feedback” form, about how their service is. Every time I’ve filled one of them in, I’ve emphasised that its unacceptable to be hanging on for 20 minutes each time you ring them, but they just don’t seem to listen! Its so frustrating! Gah!

But at least I can type whilst waiting!

Film 57 – Che, Part One )

Book Ninety – The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho )

Book Ninety One – This Time of Dying by Reina James )

Book Ninety Two – Goodnight Lady by Martina Cole )

…and that’s it ! All up to date! Woo! Still need to go back and work out where I’ve got the numbers wrong though…I think I just can’t count, and I don’t think I’ve missed any more reviews out…I hope not anyway, as I don’t think I’ll be able to remember the books anyway! I'm currently reading "Room" by Emma Donoghue....the most amazing book I've read for a long time!! So far anyway. I even had to have a slightly-longer-than-I'm-allowed lunch break as I just couldn't put it down!

Film 55 – Wall-E )

Book Eighty Eight – Star Struck by Val McDermid )

Book Eighty Nine – Naked Lunch by William Burroughs )

Film 56 - The Edukators )

And in relation to that last point...does anyone have any non-english language films they would like to recommend? :)

Not sure whether I should delete the rant-y post I made earlier - although I shouldn't feel ashamed of my opinions, I don't know whether it reads too strong compared to what I meant! But oh well. If I can't write them here where can I write them!

I think I've got a bit mixed up, again, with my book-numbering, as in the book that I write down all the books I've read I seem to have read one less than in my list of ones I still need to write reviews for...I hope theres a way to search my journal on here as I think maybe I've written one review twice! Apart from sorting that out, I've got three more book reviews, and one film review, and I'm up to date, woo! :) I'm just about to start reading "Room" by Emma Donoghue, which sounds really good, and was nominated for the Booker Prize so hopefully it is :)

I’ve just realised that I’ve missed out a review for a book which I read months ago, so I’m not too badly off in keeping to my target (120 in a year, which is 10 a month). I’ve now read 84 books (well…83 but I only have one chapter left of the current book I’m reading, so will finish that at lunchtime!). So I either need to read 6 books by Thursday (unlikely!) or read 12 a month for the next three months….which is probably doable – possibly with a bit of cheating! I will try and keep up on my reviews as well, as I keep getting behind…maybe too much time reading the actually books instead of writing about them! hehe! But anyway, pressing on with reviews…

Ooh and in other interesting news I've joined a book club (well haven't been to it yet, but I'm going to get the book to read on Saturday!). I'm quite excited about it really, isn't that sad, haha. The first book to read is "The House of Special Purpose" by John Boyne, which I have been wanting to buy and read ever since it came out, so now this is a good excuse to do so!

Just added the "mood" thingy, and for "geeky" its a cat by a computer... I want one to be reading a book! :)

Film 49 - Shaun of the Dead

I mainly watched this to make sure I had my costume for Bloodstock right - as I was going as Shaun, complete with cricket bat!

This film follows Shaun (Simon Pegg) an ordinary man who wakes up one morning and gradually starts to realise something weird is going on - there are lots of zombies around! He is also dealing with his girlfriend dumping him and his life which is really going nowhere, until this day! He gets together with a group of his friends and battles through the day, to get to the Winchester, their local pub, to try and sit it out until they're all gone. During this he has to kill his mum, and his best friend (Nick Frost) gets turned into a zombie. This film is totally fantastic, and my favourite film!! The first film from director Edgar Wright, it has so many little references to other films, and so many great quotable lines. The actors they've got to play Shaun, his friends and his family, are excellent comedy actors, and while the film is all funny, its not really crude or horrible, despite being about zombies. My favourite bit is when they're throwing the records at the zombie's head's to stop them coming towards them:

Shaun: Wait wait, what was that??
Ed: erm..Blue Monday
Shaun: That was an original pressing!!

which would totally be my reaction if I ever had to throw records at zombies coming towards me! :D :D Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys good British films, British comedy, and film references. Don't be put off by the zombies - I don't like horror films and have never seen any zombie films before, but this is just about a normal day which happens to have zombies appear in it, so its not that scary at all...although Katie says it scares her a lot *because* its so normal and could so easily happen to us!! :) 10 / 10

Coming up next - a book containing one of my top 3 most hated characters, and another film by Edgar Wright! :)
spooky_miss: (Default)
Film 47 - Pulp Fiction

I've been stuck on this one for a while as I don't really know how to describe what its about - I could probably go on for a few thousand words about it, but I won't! I'll just tell you what I think about it! I love Quentin Tarantino as a director, and this is one of his best films. All the different strands of stories are so cleverly woven together, and theres so many little references to other films and stories, its great. I like John Travolta and Samuel Jackson's story best I think, and I really like the way that it links back to the first scene right at the end. The dialogue in Tarantino films is excellent, and this is no exception. There are just so many classic lines. And Quentin's cameo - well more than a cameo, a whole part - is great too. Definately recommended for film fans! 10 / 10

Film 48 - Madagascar

This film follows four animals - Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo - from Central Park Zoo who get themselves shipped to Madagascar for trying to escape from the Zoo. Here they meet a tribe of lemurs and monkeys, ruled over by King Julien, who are terrorised by animals they call the "foosa". The animals (named by the lemurs "the New York Giants") scare away these animals, and then with four penguins who also came from New York - although they escaped by themselves! - try to find a way off of the island. The ending then sets it up perfectly for a sequel!

I really like this film, even though it is more of just a children's film instead of the adult and children's films that animations tend to be nowadays, but I like that. I think Shrek for example is just too adult orientated. Madagascar is a fun little film which has some great characters and voices - most notably Sacha Baron Cohen as King Julien, who is so funny. Nothing deep and meaningful here at all, but just good fun! :) 8 / 10

Film 46 - James and the Giant Peach

This film tells the story of James, who has a very happy life with his parents until they go to New York and get eaten by a rhino! (Remember this is a Roald Dahl book!! :) ). He then goes to live with his aunts Sponge and Spiker (played brilliantly by Joanna Lumley and Miriam Margolyes), where his life takes a turn for the worse. They treat him terribly, and make him do all of their chores and don't let him have any fun. They ask him one day to get rid of a spider - which he saves and lets go in the garden instead of killing. When he goes into the garden he finds some strange things which he drops around the peach tree. When he wakes up in the morning, the tree has started growing a peach...which just keeps on growing! James climbs inside the peach and meets the insects who live inside it - Mr. Old Green Grasshopper, Mr. Centipede, Mr. Earthworm, Miss Spider, Mrs. Ladybug, and Glowworm. They then cut the stalk of the peach, to get away from the aunts who just wanted to make money out of the peach, and begin to sail away across the sea to America. Theres a fantastic bit when they have to use the Spider's web to catch seagulls to fly the peach through the air. It all ends happily with James living in the peach stone in Central Park, with his insect friends.

This is a great version of the book, directed by Tim Burton. The mixture of Tim Burton's "dark"-ness, and Roald Dahl's excellent story telling goes together really well. The film starts live action, and goes into stop motion, which works really well. The original story is great and the film presents it really well. Recommended to everyone! :) 9 / 10
