day 06 → whatever tickles your fancy
Oh dear, I hoped it wasn't one of these today, as I really feel like having a rant about things! I think this *might* get a few comments, but I might as well talk about it anyway.
There is something on the BBC website about that woman who put the cat in the bin, about how she was fined £250 for it. Personally I think that if she has to be punished for it, thats fair enough, but part of me is thinking why does she even need to be punished? Yeah it was cruel, but no one was hurt, no one died, no one suffered emotionally - I know people will argue that the cat did, but really, cats become stuck in things all the time, in sheds, garages, even in car engines, and they all seem to be ok after that, so its debatable if it would affect it that much.
I've had pets in the past, and they were lovely - Thumper and Huxley, my rabbit and guinea pig - unfortunately we weren't trying to be interlectual, Huxley is named after a children's tv character, not the writer!! :) But I'm not particularly an animal lover, and I am scared of dogs, so that doesn't really endear me to dog owners at all. Cats are ok. And I *know* that some people love their animals like they love their children - or maybe they don't have children so they have to transfer their love to their pets - but I just don't see the big deal. According to the NSPCC website a child dies on average every 10 days at the hands of their parents, yet no one makes a particular fuss about that. Children under 5, if they are killed, are much more likely to die at the hands of their parents than someone they don't know. But people don't seem to care. I would *never* give money to an animal charity, animals can actually help themselves, if humans would let them, whereas babies and children are totally dependent on their parents / carers.
Gah it just makes me angry. Maybe its because I work with social workers so I *know* what goes on in some families, but all the fuss given to animals just seems to me to be unwarranted.
