Book Sixty Six - Arthur and George by Julian Barnes
Number of pages 360
Reason read My mum bought it home from her library which was getting rid of it
Rating 9 / 10
This book tells the stories of Arthur and George at the beginning of the 20th century. Their stories begin separately and come together towards the end. George lives in a small village and begins to be sent anonymous letters accusing him of various crimes. He contacts the police, but they seem to think its all unimportant, and think that he did actually do the crimes. It ends up with him being imprisoned, on the flawed evidence of several "experts". At the same time the sections on Arthur show him going through his life, and learning more about spriritualism and things of that sort. The story gradually goes more in depth, and you find out that George is called George Edalji, with an Indian father and Scottish mother, and there is the implication that his race has something to do with his conviction. It also turns out that Arthur is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and it describes how his life changes with the publication of Sherlock Holmes. After he is released from prison George contacts Arthur to ask him to investigate his case and try to clear his name - many people do this as they expect Arthur to be as good as Sherlock Holmes - but Arthur does decide to take this case on. This is based on a true story - although I didn't know that until I realised it was Arthur Conan Doyle - and in my opinion that made it even better as a book. It is very well written and really draws you into the story. 9 / 10! :)
Film 42 - Toy Story 3
This is a truely wonderful film!! :D It brings back all (well...most!) of the characters from the first two films, but now Andy has grown up and is going to college. He is sorting out all his possessions and comes across Woody, Buzz, Slinky and all the others. He puts them in a bag to go in the attic - but they accidentally get put out for the rubbish! The toys manage to get back to the family car, but then get taken to Sunnyside Day Care Centre. Here they meet lots of new characters and new toys, including the welcoming (at first!) Lotso Hugging Bear. There is a fantastic bit when Barbie meets Ken, haha. Woody meanwhile has been separated from the others and ends up in a child's bedroom, being played with with all her toys - including Totoro! who is sooooo cute :D hehe :D Meanwhile at the Day Care Centre the toys have discovered that Lotso isn't quite as nice as he appears to be, and has put the toys into the "younger" play area, where they get drawn on, broken, and almost destroyed, instead of being treated nicely as they would in the older area. The toys get locked up separately, and they have to formulate a plan to get out of the day care centre, and back to Andy before he goes to college. I won't tell the whole story, but there are some bits which are hilarious, some bits which the whole cinema was in a shocked silence, and of course the ending, which makes everyone cry! It is one of the best children's films released recently - if you could call it a children's film, as although it doesn't have any adult type jokes like in the Shrek films, it is aimed at those who saw the first film, who will now be growing up and getting rid of their toys! I don't think it would have the same emotions behind it for a small child. Definately recommended! :) :) 10 / 10!
