This Weekend

Now I've caught up on the all the books and films I've read and seen (and also probably because some people have recently added me as a friend so I know / think people are reading this now...) I want to write in here more but I don't really have anything to say at the moment!
This weekend is a quiet one, not going out at all (as in pub / club or whatever). I have managed to spend lots of money though - went to the opticians today and I need new glasses, which cost quite a lot, but I did get a free second pair, which is nice. They're a bit different from my current glasses, so I hope people notice I've got them, haha.
I've just watched Dr Who, which I enjoyed. Although I don't watch it as a specifically sci-fi thing, I'm not that bothered about the aliens and the monsters, I just really like the Doctor and how he interacts with Amy and those around him. At the moment I'm not sure if I like the new doctor as much as David Tennant, but he's definately growing on me. I like the way he's not as "all-knowing" as David Tennant's Doctor, he doesn't know what to do straight away in some situations, which is funny. Then watched the Over The Rainbow programme - I love musicals so I like this, although the Wizard of Oz has never appealed to me at all, i really like the other songs they sing. Was a bit of a surprise who was in the bottom two this week, but I think one of them people aren't voting for her because they don't like her, not because she's bad at singing or anything. She doesn't seem to come across as a particually nice person. Luckily the one I like is still in it, and I hope she'll win!
I'm currently reading On The Road by Jack Kerouac, I'm half way through but not too keen on it. It sort of reads like a cross between The Grapes of Wrath (travelling and having problems getting money / shelter etc), and The Catcher in the Rye (his general outlook on life, and the writing style in a way)...one of which I liked (Grapes of Wrath) and one of which I disliked (Catcher in the Rye), so I'm not sure whether I will like it overall. It does annoy me when these highly regarded books aren't as good as they have been described (Catch 22 and Catcher in the Rye are the ones which spring to mind), as I do sort of feel I've wasted my time as there are so many other books I want to read! But at least I've read it now (well almost!) and don't have to go back to it :)
hmm, maybe I did have a lot to write about after all! :)
I'm currently watching Hunger, the film about the hunger strikers at the Maze Prison in the 1980s. Its only 15 minutes in, so can't really have an opinion of it yet, but I can tell its going to be an interesting film! As I've been writing this it's actually got a bit disgusting...hopefully it won't continue like this for the whole film...but then again I suppose thats what they did! I don't really know much about the Irish conflict at all, although I know I should as it really affected this country. When I've read all the books I have already maybe I'll get some books on it!

Date: 2010-05-09 09:55 am (UTC)I'm sorry you're not enjoying on the road. I have to say Keraouc is one of my favourite authors. I loved on the road. I love the way he writes. The prose is just so beautiful to me. I love the honesty in what he writes. I had always pictured 1950s America to be so dull and full of housewives and very suburban. But reading on the road opened my eyes and reaffirmed the fact that people are people whatever age. And they were there having the same parties we do now, hanging out drinking, doing drugs, having crazy adventures, being poor, falling in love, they just listened to jazz instead of goth. I was fascinated by the women in the book, Luanne and Carolyn (Crap their fake names in otr have gone), how they'd leave their homes and security to go and live in such wild and different ways. I just found it such a vivid portrayal of life.
