I haven't seen the film, I came to her through The Bell Jar and then learnt more about her so I guess I came from the other way - through her work. I'm fairly anti Hughes and haven't read much of his stuff. I think Plath used her work as a way to try to fight her illness, so a lot of it is about that, which I understand could come through as selfish.
If you don't like the beat style then don't bother lol! Seriously though, why read stuff you're pretty sure you're not going to like? There's plenty of poetry out there.
