Book Two. List of "TO BE READ" :)
Jan. 15th, 2010 11:08 pmWell I've finished it...and I really didn't want it to end!! :) World Without End by Ken Follett is a sequel to his amazing book Pillars Of the Earth, and in my opinion its just as great as that! It follows the story of the residents of Kingsbridge, its Priory and the surrounding area, and is set in the 14th century, around the time of the plague (which features in this story!) Its basically about how all the the people of differing social class and status in society mix together - or don't mix! And its just great! Whenever I read it I really feel like I am right there, in the story. I feel so much for the characters, and as its the sort of book in which everything seems to be going great and then something awful happens, its happy and sad in equal measure. It has so much detail about medieval life and the things which ruled it (the king, the earl, the church etc) and the everyday things they had to deal with. and World Without End mentioned the hospital a lot, and i like the history of medicine, so I found all that really interesting. I suppose its not all *totally* historically accurate, but I imagine that it is more or less. I'd really like to read more books set in this period - but only if they're as good as these ones! I don't really know any of Ken Follett's other books, but I think they're thriller type ones, very different from these two, but I might give them a try, as I do like his style.
And of course I give World Without End 10/10! :)
I'm currently reading Newgate: London's Prototype of Hell, by Stephen Halliday. Its good so far, a history of Newgate Prison. I want to read more non fiction this year, so this is a good start.
Talking of things I'd like to read this year, I've got a few books that I really want to read again - I don't usually read books again, not that I don't want to, but because I just have so many others to read, but theres some great books that I really feel deserve another read - so far I've got:
1. The Secret History - Donna Tartt
2. Little Women / Good Wives / Little Men / Jo's Boys - Louisa M Alcott
3. Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
4. Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
5. 1984 - George Orwell
6. Behind the Scenes At The Museum - Kate Atkinson
7. Sophie's World - Jostein Gaarder
8. Dracula - Bram Stoker
9. Frankenstein - Mary Shelley
Mainly inspired by the fact that I bought Katie a book fr Christmas which has been written as the sequel to Dracula, and I actually can't really remember what happened in Dracula, so to read this other book I think I should know, hehe.
Talking of Katie, I'm going to see her tomorrow and we're going to the Wendyhouse in Leeds, which should be great! :) I've already requested some songs so hopefully there will be lots of dancing, I'm really looking forward to it. And then on Sunday theres a goth bring and buy sale in Leeds! I think its at the Subculture, but I can't remember...but if anyone who is reading this is in Leeds from 3 - 7pm tomorrow, come have look!
In other, quite interesting news, I think I've decided to do a Open University course! Just a short one...but I'm still quite nervous about it, I don't want to fail and feel like a failure again! But I think I still might try.... :)
And of course I give World Without End 10/10! :)
