Whitby!

Whitby October 2010

This was the third time we’d been to Whitby – and the first time we didn’t get lost!! Thanks to the sat nav, the journey there was really easy, and we found where we were staying, Boulmer Guest House, really easily – although parking spaces were more difficult to find, and the space we found was so tight the owner of the B&B had to help Katie park in it! The room was nice, I was a bit worried as it said it was a separate bathroom, but it was actually just outside the door of the room, so that was ok. Bit of a problem when I pulled the door handle off the first time I opened the door, haha, but luckily it was only decorative so didn’t mean the door didn’t work. We got in and slightly unpacked – Katie had lots of little bags and I had a hugely heavy suitcase, so we just sort of arranged them in the room. We decided to go to the “Deviation” clubnight at Laughtons in the evening, and have fish and chips first. We got to Whitby about 3pm in the afternoon so we looked round the shops a bit (charity shops, woo! And I only bought 2 books!) and then had our fish and chips from a really lovely fish and chip shop. The club night was really great, the genres they played were really good (goth, 80s, rock, EBM, industrial, 80s, metal, some pop) and the mix of songs was great – they played, say, 3 goth, then 3 80s, then 3 pop…including a great bit where they played Are Friends Electric by Gary Numan, and then the Sugarbabes song which samples / uses the music from it! I also heard my first ever Lady Gaga song…which was ok, but I’m not overly impressed. They also played this amazing War of the Worlds song remix – I must remember to ask Katie what it was called as I want to listen to it again!

The next day (Friday) all the stalls were open and we went round them a bit. So far I’ve been quite disappointed that there haven’t been more stalls selling music – I would prefer records, but cds are ok! There is only the Resurrection Records stall, which although that is very good, I would love to be able to buy loads of records at Whitby. There were lots of lovely clothes stalls though of course, and lots of people dressed up in lovely clothes! I didn’t buy anything apart from a headband with a ladybird on it to go with my ladybird costume. The stall which I bought that from (can’t remember its name now though, which is a bit annoying!) also had these lovely hats which had a “woodland” theme with leaves (is that how you spell that – plural of leaf!!!) and toadstools and things. Usually I find those kind of things a bit wishy washy, but they were lovely. We saw Katie’s friend’s steampunk stall, and also “Chandler’s Chains”, which a lot of people mentioned when Katie had her stall last year. I must say I wasn’t too impressed, it was mostly just “plain” chainmail, in some different colours but not loads. I did expect more intricate designs and patterns and there weren’t really.

While we were walking around we noticed there were some flyers saying the dates of the “official” Whitby weekends for 2011. For the “official” WGW event the dates are last weekend in March and first weekend in November – with the Dark Daisy events (now called “Whitby Alt Weekend”) being on first weekend in April and last weekend in October. I think we’re going to go (well, I want to go) to the April and October dates – I don’t have holiday left for the March dates, and in October there’s a Bram Stoker Film festival as well, which should be interesting. I was thinking that it would be nice to have some kind of film or literature aspect to the Goth weekend.

During the day Katie was dressed as Little Red Riding Hood, in the costume she made for her uni course, which was so wonderful. She kept getting stopped for people to take pictures of her as well, which was lovely. In the evening we went to the “Nights of Victorian Gothic” at the Abbey, which may have been a mistake as it was SO windy – we were there trying to look all cool and goth but the wind was really messing up our hair, haha. It was a great show though, put on by English Heritage. It started with a kind of Victorian side show show, with a “wild man” who ended up lying on a bed of nails! Then there were some characters telling us about how their Victorian life was – we listened to a man telling us about the “resurrectionists”, who stole bodies, and then a “lady of the night” who told us about the life “normal” people lived in Victorian times. Ooh and then there was a proper Victorian funeral procession, with someone explaining all the different bits of it, like why the people marched in front of it and things. It was really good, and really well put together. The Abbey was also all lit up, and there were some spooky sounds playing, haha. After this we were really windswept so we went back down from the Abbey and went to the Shambles for dinner. The food was great (well that night it was anyway!).

On Saturday we went round the stalls again, oh and had an ice cream! :D and then it was the “Committed to the Met” costume ball. Unfortunately we found out about a secret March Violets gig on the same night!!!!!!!! I was going to go, but then that would have left Katie on her own at the Costume Ball, and I had already got a costume all sorted out, so I decided not to go – as we were seeing them in London a couple of weeks afterwards as well. The Costume ball was good, although the amount of people on the theme – Circus from Hell – was terrible, there was only me (a zombie ringmaster) and Katie (a zombie performing animal!) really – as well as a guy who just had ducks all over him, so he could have been “hook a duck”, but we weren’t sure (and that’s not *really* a circus thing, more of a fair thing!). Luckily we were the only few though – as Katie won! Woo! :D It was great! The duck guy won as well. The music was ok, although a bit metal-y, I like a bit of metal, but not that much! But it was really busy, so that was good. Although we did realise a good point about a bad band – the best thing about Pendulum is that they usually play Prodigy after it, haha!

Sunday was a very quiet day, I went for a walk but Katie just stayed in bed mainly! We went to the Shambles for dinner, where I had a really dry and disappointing lasagne, and then were going to go out again for the 80s night, but Katie fell asleep! So we just stayed in and watched TV – Downton Abbey was on so that was great! I love it, so glad its coming back for another series!

Overall, another great weekend in Whitby. Its such a lovely seaside town, and somewhere I’d come for a holiday even without the goth connection! Hopefully we can get more people to come next year, as its much cheaper if we could stay in a self catering cottage (and in the B&B we woke up too late for breakfast every day, haha!). Rob was there but unfortunately we didn’t see him, as he was only there for one day – to see another band which we missed due to the Costume ball, Last July. They’re playing in April so will have to see them then I think!

As this is a hugely long post I’m going to put all the pictures in the next post… :)
