Ozzfest Review
Ozzfest, O2 Arena, 18th September 2010
Line Up:
Main Stage – Skindred, Steel Panther, Murderdolls, Korn and Ozzy
2nd Stage - Jettblack, Revoker, Black Spiders, Paradise Lost
This was on the 18th September, which shows how far behind in my reviews I am! I’d only been to the O2 once before, to see Depeche Mode, but I do think it’s a really good venue (apart from the prices of food and drink…..!!!), even though I don’t particularly like big venues like that. The sound is good, it’s a nice place to walk around, and you get a good view from wherever you stand.
For this gig the main bands I wanted to see were Murderdolls, Ozzy and Paradise Lost, and Korn just because I’d never seen them before, although I don’t know anything other than their “famous” songs. I most definitely DIDN’T want to see Steel Panther – one of the worst bands around at the moment in my opinion! Not only is it glam rock and I dislike glam rock, its so fake – they all (well, three out of 4 of them) wear wigs, for example. Who cares what their hair is like? It should be all about the music! But anyway, less about them as it makes me angry, hehe. I went with Katie, Ben and Sophy, and when we first got there we went through the metal detectors and realised that that chainmail sets it off! So bear that in mind anyone who wears any of Katie’s chainmail! We walked round for a bit, then decided to go eat in the Slug and Lettuce. The food was good, although the drinks were so expensive! We then went into the arena, and found a good spot to watch Murderdolls from. I used to really love the Murderdolls, they were the first band that I really got into (despite them only having one album at the time!) and they weren’t disappointing. Their new stuff is good, although it has less of a “horror” theme, it still has the slightly punky sound, which is good. And of course they played a good selection of their old stuff, which was good! After we’d seen them we went to walk around the “Village of the Damned”, which was just a few stalls and shops in the arena. It was set up really well actually. Then Paradise Lost were on, on the smaller “Jaegermeisser” stage. This was really great as the crowd started really small, and we got right near the front! Paradise Lost are always really good and this was no exception. I got some great pictures as well (I must remember to post some on here!). Unfortunately PL were on at the same time as Korn, and so as I wanted to see them as well we left about half way through Paradise Lost. Unfortunately I decided I wanted a drink, and due to the staff messing around, running out of *all* the drinks I wanted, and taking aaaaaaages to sort it out (fail!) we missed all but two of Korn’s songs. The tickets we had let us go into the standing area, and the first tier of seating, so for the small bit of Korn we saw we were stood at the top of the tier of seats, so had a fantastic view. I took some great pictures of that as well, and of the moshpit! One thing which is a bit weird though, why does Jonathon Davis always wear a tracksuit? Its horrible! We did see him playing the bagpipes though, which was great.
After Korn had finished, we went back down and stood where we’d been standing for the Murderdolls and waited for Ozzy. He started with a short film, with himself superimposed (is that the right word??) onto films and things, including Avatar and Twilight. It was funny, but not as hilarious as others seemed to find it! Then Ozzy came on, and he was so much better than I thought he would be! He’d had to cancel the show a couple of nights previously due to his bad back, so I thought he would be a bit more slow and sedate, but he wasn’t at all! He was running around, and looked like he was having a great time! It was like he was a little child being told he can do his favourite thing ever in the world. As its so long ago I can’t remember the exact setlist, but he played some great songs, including some Sabbath songs (Fairies Wear Boots, War Pigs, and Paranoid), Crazy Train, Mr Crowley, and only a couple of songs from his new album, which I was surprised about. I definitely thought he didn’t seem as confident on his new songs though, which was a shame, but when he got back to the old ones it was great.
Overall this was a really good gig, I’m glad I’ve seen Ozzy on his own – although it was a shame Zakk Wylde isn’t in his band anymore, I would have liked to have seen him. The atmosphere was really good, everyone was more “metal” than I thought they would be, and the only problems really were the prices of food and drink – plus the fact that they don’t do tap water! Totally ridiculous for a gig that size! At all other gig venues they have free water for people coming out of the crowd, for example at Brixton they have it out already on the bar, but at the O2, which is much more likely for people to be squashed in the crowd, they don’t. Oh and £4.50 for a Strawberry Brother’s Cider?????? I got an email from O2 asking me what I thought of the event after, and so I made it clear that it is a good venue for seeing bands, but the prices of drinks especially are just ridiculous. They don’t seem to realise that the cheaper things are, the more people will buy them – e.g. if the cider was cheaper I would have bought several and spent over £4.50 in total – but as it was so expensive I didn’t even buy one! But anyway…all in all, a good gig! :)
