Infest Review
Infest, 27th to 29th August 2010, Bradford Uni
This was the second Infest I’d been to, and the first one they’d done since the building had been refurbished – the festival was in fact the first event to use the new building! Katie had a stall selling some things that she’d made, which went really really well, she sold lots of things and made lots of money! :) I think this year there were less bands I was interested in, but that was ok. I’d listened to most of them before we got there, on Spotify, and there were three female vocalled ones which I wasn’t bothered about, a couple of weird ones, and then Rotersand, De/Vision, Project Pitchfork and Nachtmahr who sounded good. We got there about 7pm on the Friday, and I think we had a room in almost the same place as in 2008, which was good. On the way there Katie raised the worrying possibility that we might have been in the “party” flat…but luckily not! It was cool to go to the party, but must have been terrible to stay in if you didn’t want to join the party as well! The trek from the car park to the halls was a bit annoying (although luckily not as bad as Bloodstock!) but we got everything sorted out in the room eventually. Although Katie realised she’d forgotten such essentials as her toothbrush, and her hair!! Luckily I had a spare toothbrush though, and she went back to Huddersfield on Sunday morning to see if the buckles for the Uberbyte costumes had come, and got some hair then.
Katie stayed in the room to finish off a couple of bits that she had been making for the stall, and I went to see De/Vision. My first impression of the venue was that it was excellent, really nice and new instead of the old and a bit dingy one that they’d had before. It was a bit of a shame that they didn’t now have the outside courtyard bit, as that was nice to stand and chat in, but there was a lovely bar area with pool tables etc which was good for that, it was in a separate room from the stage, but did have music on, so it was quiet enough to chat, but not boring! De/Vision were ok, but a little bit boring – I don’t know if it was that I didn’t know many of their songs (although that doesn’t really make a difference usually) but the singer didn’t seem totally into it and passionate about it. It made for a great people watching experience though, during which I decided that the hair colour of the weekend was a light blue, and the style was undercut!! So many people had their hair in some kind of combination of those two. I was also thinking – who decided that people in the industrial scene should wear stompy boots?? Almost everyone had some kind of platform or chunky shoe / trainer on. Which is cool, but who said they should?? Haha :) After the band were on I didn’t really want to dance on my own, so I went back to the room.
The next day we got up early (but not too early, luckily!) to go and set Katie’s stall up. It was easier to carry the stuff from the car to the room where it was being held, so that was good. There was a tiny bit of excitement when we realised that the stall was next to the Jed Phoenix stall, which is a company that Katie was thinking of doing an internship with if she hadn’t have got her job. I was a bit surprised that there weren’t more smaller stalls of people who just make things in their spare time, they were mainly all “proper” businesses, but that was cool! Another guy near us made jewellery and sculptures out of bits of electrical equipment, and had this “robot” who had pens attached to it and moved in a random sequence to make a picture. I think it was just to show off his skills at making things, but he ended up selling the pictures as well! We set the stall up (see picture!) and everyone was allowed in at 1pm. It was due to be opening at 3pm, but due to some demonstrations in Bradford it was opened earlier so people could come there instead of going into the town. The demonstrations were actually banned, but there was still a bit of trouble and about 10 people were arrested I think. We didn’t see any of it up at the uni though, which was good!
The day went well, with a lot of people buying things! Katie went to see [X-RX] who were apparently good, while I looked after the stall. All through the day one of the organisers (Chris, I think) had been coming and asking if everything was ok, which was really nice. It was all very well organised and surprisingly friendly. He came round later on in the evening to ask what time we had thought of closing, as they were going to lock the room with everything still in it. Katie said she didn’t mind, whatever other people wanted, but we decided to pack everything away at about 11pm and then go and see Rotersand. Rotersand were amazing!! I have seen them before, but this was much better than that. They played some of my favourite songs (although I missed Almost Violent as we were talking to the Licorish (not sure if I’ve spelt that right!) Latex people – I could still hear it though!) , and the crowd was obviously really really into it, which was great. And there were two daleks! :D and talking of daleks, exterminate, annihilate destroy was amazing, soooo good! That’s one of those songs which make my tummy go funny when I hear the first few bars, as I know its so good!
The next day, Katie carried on selling things, and I decided to treat myself and buy something which I’d wanted for ages – a purple and black stripy Spank jumper :D Its so nice, so soft and has great flared sleeves. Unfortunately its been too hot to wear it since, but hopefully it’ll be cold again soon! I also bought a purple latex flower hair clip. Katie went to see Nachtmahr, which she said were good, with a guest vocal appearance from Richard (from Uberbyte) – it would have been cool to see that. I really hope Uberbyte play Infest next year, that’d be great! I went to see Project Pitchfork and came back after to help Katie pack up the stall. Project Pitchfork were a bit disappointing actually, although maybe it was because the crowd was a bit smaller than Rotersand, so the atmosphere wasn’t as good. They played one of the songs that I knew, which was good. People didn’t seem quite so into it as Rotersand though, I’d say that even though Project Pitchfork were billed higher, Rotersand was the main band. After the band finished, me and Katie went for a dance in the 80s / goth room, which was great – until the fire alarm went off! Luckily we weren’t outside for too long. One great moment was during playing “This Corrosion”, everyone was singing along so much that you could hear them over the music :D Fantastic! :D After the fire alarm we went to the main room and met Warren and some other people we knew, and danced with them, which was fun! The music was excellent, especially one song which I’d just asked Katie “oh I wonder if they’ll play…”…and then it played! :) The last song of the weekend was “Money Shot” by Uberbyte, which I’m not sure about as it is a bit rude for my tastes, it has a good tune and everyone seemed to really like it, which was great.
Overall, it was a really great weekend. I loved it as there were so many people who were passionate about the kind of music I like, and I don’t get that very often! Katie did really well on her stall, and having a stall is a great way to people watch, which I like! The venue was really good, an improvement on the previous one I think. The only negative point I think was the food – but that was due to the caterers pulling out at the last minute, they only had a burger van and a doughnut van. Next year that’ll be better I’m sure!
Oh and we filled in the survey about what bands we’d like to see next year – I was very happy and highly amused to see The Sisters of Mercy on the list, so obviously that was my first choice! I very much doubt they’d play, but if theres a chance, that’s great! I also put down Gary Numan, as his music now is a lot more electronic than it has previously been, so I think he’d really fit in well. Covenant, Uberbyte and Faderhead were the other main ones I want to see, although I did end up with a big list as I kept thinking of bands!
In summary – it was great and I can’t wait for next year!! :D
