Books Sixty Eight and Sixty Nine
Book Sixty Eight - Celandine by Steve Augarde
This is a teenage book, about a girl who meets "little people" in the woods by her home, and how she becomes involves in their lives. The story is set during the First World War, and Celandine meets the "people" after she runs away from her boarding school, where she is bullied and accused of being a witch. She had previously seen them, but didn't know what they were. Her brother dies in the war, and she runs away to where she knows the "people" live. There are three separate tribes, and the one she meets accepts her into theirs and she begins to teach them to read. They have a special stone which they believe is their duty to protect, from one of the other tribes who is trying to get it as they think it is their stone. In the end, she has to leave them, but they ensure that their stone is protected.
I was a bit unsure about this book at first, as I'm not too keen on fantasy type books, but it was ok in the end. I must say though, as I was reading it I could see similarities to Terry Pratchett's people who are in the Truckers / Diggers / Wings books, which are much better than this. I think if someone gave me the other books in this series I would read them, but I wouldn't seek them out. Its good for people who like books about faries / elves / fantasy type things though. 6.5 / 10
Book Sixty Nine - Burlesque and the Art of the Teese by Dita Von Teese
I bought this book from a car boot sale for £2 - bargain! I like Dita Von Teese and think she's beautiful, so I liked this book, well half of it anyway! One half of it is about burlesque, old fashioned glamour (not "glamour" modelling as we have it today!!) and old fashioned type of modelling, the other half of the book is about "fetish" - which I admit I am not as keen on. Her outfits in the burlesque bit are just wonderful, and she gives lots of tips on how to become glamorous and look beautiful! A bit of a wishy washy book, mainly pictures, but it was cool :) I didn't really like the fetish bit - I don't like the style as much as the burlesque, and it was just like what people wear at Slimelight and similar, so either the pictures aren't that extreme, or what people wear at Slimelight is extreme! :) Recommended if you like looking at pictures of beautiful women, hehe :) 8 / 10
