Film 46 - James and the Giant Peach
This film tells the story of James, who has a very happy life with his parents until they go to New York and get eaten by a rhino! (Remember this is a Roald Dahl book!! :) ). He then goes to live with his aunts Sponge and Spiker (played brilliantly by Joanna Lumley and Miriam Margolyes), where his life takes a turn for the worse. They treat him terribly, and make him do all of their chores and don't let him have any fun. They ask him one day to get rid of a spider - which he saves and lets go in the garden instead of killing. When he goes into the garden he finds some strange things which he drops around the peach tree. When he wakes up in the morning, the tree has started growing a peach...which just keeps on growing! James climbs inside the peach and meets the insects who live inside it - Mr. Old Green Grasshopper, Mr. Centipede, Mr. Earthworm, Miss Spider, Mrs. Ladybug, and Glowworm. They then cut the stalk of the peach, to get away from the aunts who just wanted to make money out of the peach, and begin to sail away across the sea to America. Theres a fantastic bit when they have to use the Spider's web to catch seagulls to fly the peach through the air. It all ends happily with James living in the peach stone in Central Park, with his insect friends.
This is a great version of the book, directed by Tim Burton. The mixture of Tim Burton's "dark"-ness, and Roald Dahl's excellent story telling goes together really well. The film starts live action, and goes into stop motion, which works really well. The original story is great and the film presents it really well. Recommended to everyone! :) 9 / 10
